Woman Cries After Looking At Her Engagement Photos And Seeing What She Used To Look Like

When her then-boyfriend Matt finally popped the question last year, it was the best day of Haley Smith’s life.

That was until she saw the photos of their proposal. “I saw them and didn’t even recognize myself,” Smith told PEOPLE. “I cried because this was one of the happiest moments of my life, but I was just so ashamed. I didn’t understand how Matt could want to be with someone like me. After seeing those, I knew I needed to change.”

Twenty-four-year-old Smith decided to make “slow habit changes” to lose weight. “I had tried drastic diets or workouts in the past and always failed after a matter of weeks,” says Smith. “With the small changes, I would just pick two habits and after about a week or two of sticking to it, I’d pick two more.” 

She started off with not eating after 8pm and only eating out twice per week. She even began logging her food and water intake saying, “Tackling those small, feasible changes made snowballing into running three times a week and adding strength training so much more doable.” 

In a little over a year, Smith lost a total of 110 lbs. “Motivation has been such a tricky thing. Even with the small habit changes, I go through so many cycles of being bored or discouraged. When I am, I really try to find different ways of staying motivated,” Smith said. 

For example, she decorated her scale and hangs motivational quotes and signs all over her house, and her daily goal charts enable her to physically check off a completed task. “I bought a Fitbit, and one of my biggest motivations has been starting my fitness Instagram account. It really helps to keep me mindful of all of this while being held accountable.”

This #motivationmonday is a new one for me, too! Since I am about 20lbs away from my goal, my weight fluctuates, and my progress has slowed way down I decided to decorate my scale! Sometimes I need a reminder that my scale doesn't know all. For those who will ask, my scale is the @fitbit Aria. I used dry erase markers because y'all know I like to update my quotes and numbers, but you can use permanent if you like! I weighed barefoot this morning and the marker didn't rub off, but you could also lay cling wrap over the dry erase if you wanted! I'm going to have to do that because my rabbit ran across my foot as I was weighing, and he smudged like half of it. ? If your scale isn't one to be markered on, you could hang your notes on a pin board on the wall in front of your scale to remind yourself that it's just a number! On Smith’s Instagram, she posted her stunning wedding photos, and she says she felt more confident than ever. 

I thought for sure I would get married in a long-sleeve ball gown dress to hide my whole body, but I ended up picking a strapless mermaid dress. I felt so beautiful in it! Instead of being self-conscious and hiding or sweating the whole time, I was able to feel confident, relax, enjoy my family and friends.”

“I honestly never thought I would feel so happy and carefree about myself on my wedding day,” Smith continued.
