Being in love is one of the most powerful things a person can experience. In fact, it is so powerful that people have been known to risk their lives or even break the law for the ones they love.
After finding the girl of his dreams, one Swedish man was ready to do anything for her. So when she asked him a simple favor, he was happy to help. Unfortunately, the favor wasn’t as simple as she made it seem…
Online dating sites have transformed the way people meet each other and fall in love. However, with every success story, there is a horror story about someone being tricked or ‘catfished’ by a person claiming to be someone or something they’re not.
Looking For Love
When one middle-aged Swedish man made a profile on an online dating site, he was hoping he would meet someone great and fall in love. The man didn’t believe he was gullible so didn’t worry too much about the possibility of getting tricked or scammed…
Too Good To Be True
Shortly after making a profile, the Swede, whose name has not been released to the public, met a young Belgium woman in her mid-20s. Despite the age difference, they had so much in common and there was undeniable chemistry between the pair.
Shortly after meeting, the man thought he had finally met the woman of his dreams. Although it seemed too good to be true, the man believed the relationship was an exception to the rule. But to be sure, the Swede decided to ask her for some proof…
In the fall of 2016, the pair officially started dating so the man asked his online girlfriend to prove that she really was the person she claimed to be since they had never met in person. To prove her identity, the 25-year-old sent pictures of herself to Sweden along with a copy of her ID card.
Falling In Love
After receiving the proof, the man finally felt sure that the relationship and her feelings were genuine. The couple spoke on the phone and online as much as they could, and after 6 months, the man knew he wanted more from the relationship and was ready to take it to the next level…
Building A Life Together
After 6 months of dating online without ever meeting in person, the couple started discussing their future. The couple never officially got engaged, but they would often speak about getting married and wanting to build a new life with one another.
The Real Deal
From the outside, it seemed crazy that the man was ready to settle down with someone he had never actually seen or spoken to in real life. But the man was happier than he had even been in his life and truly believed that what he had with the Belgian was real…
Any lingering doubts that the man did have about the relationship were extinguished when they spoke about their future life together and actually planned to meet for the first time. By this point, the Swede had let all of his guards down and had completely fallen in love.
The First Meeting
After the couple decided on a day and time to finally meet, the man began counting down the days. However, just before the long-awaited meeting was supposed to take place, the woman had to cancel. It was suspicious timing, but she assured her boyfriend there was a good reason…
The 25-year-old explained she had gotten sick and had been admitted to the hospital. Since she wasn’t allowed to leave the hospital, never mind travel outside of the country, in her condition, she had been forced to cancel their plans but promised it was only a temporary delay.
The man had heard of stories where people fall in love with a total stranger online and end up getting tricked into sending thousands of dollars to them after a tragic accident or health issue. However, the woman never asked him to do anything like that…
Around the same time, the woman said that her father had passed away. She was clearly going through a hard time, but she never asked for any financial support. Throughout their entire relationship, she only seemed to want emotional support and the man was more than willing to give it to her.
Eventually, the woman needed money to pay for her treatment. The Swede would have sent her the money she needed in an instant, but she insisted she would be fine. She explained that her late father had left her an inheritance, which she also planned to use to start their life together once she was out of the hospital…
A Small Favor
Yet when the 25-year-old tried to access the funds, she told her boyfriend that she was told the money had been left to her in the form of traveler’s cheques. Since she couldn’t leave the hospital to cash them herself, she asked the man for a small favor.
Cashing The Cheques
The woman asked her boyfriend to cash the checks for her, and he happily offered to help. After the traveler’s cheques arrived in the mail, the man brought 2 of the cheques worth 500 euros each to a bank in Helsingborg and cashed them both…
A Suspicious Request
The next day, the man went to another bank and tried to cash 8 more cheques. However, when the staff saw how much money the man was trying to exchange at once, they became suspicious. Instead of handing over the money, the staff called the police.
When the police arrived, they inspected the cheques and determined all 8 were counterfeit. Police immediately arrested the man and charged him with fraud and attempted gross fraud. The Swede thought there must have been a mistake, but while in custody, the reality of the situation started to sink in…
When his day in court arrived, the man’s lawyer explained what had happened and how he truly believed he was cashing genuine cheques for his sick girlfriend. Prosecutor Eleonara Johansson didn’t believe the story and argued that the man knowingly committed fraud.
Ultimately, the court found the man not guilty on all charges. “[He] started a relationship with a significantly younger woman and decided to live together without having met in real life is not something unique to him,” the court explained in the ruling. “[He] was very much in love and excited that he and the woman would finally be together. In such a situation it is easy to act in a naïve and gullible way.”
