It takes a great deal of strength for a person to overcome life’s challenges and come out stronger on the other side. Despite their best efforts, some people are unable to handle all that is thrown at them. Life is precious and while many people know that, the difficulties in their lives sometimes blur their vision.
The beautiful woman in the following story sadly fell victim to circumstances in her life. But what led to her demise? While many would point to drugs as being the culprit, as in most cases similar to this, that wasn’t what happened here. Here’s a glimpse into the life of this former Playboy Playmate and what seems to have led her off the edge…
Stephanie was born in July 1970 and was raised by her aunts Joyce and Pearl. Being that both her aunts were former models, they encouraged Stephanie to begin modeling at a young age. Modeling was in her blood and she wanted to make her family proud.
A Family Of Models
After graduating from Ophelia Devore School of Charm, Stephanie, who was of African American, Caucasian, and Cherokee descent, began her career in modeling. She appeared in numerous photo shoots for Seventeen magazine, Venus Swimwear and did commercial advertisements for Clairol…
Graduation And Playboy
In 1992, the same year Stephanie graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, she appeared in Playboy magazine. Being dubbed “Miss November 1992,” Stephanie felt like her career was really taking off.
Launched Organic Company
Stephanie then used her modeling platform to launch a national oil and aromatherapy company called GODDESSY in 1999. She even noted on her website that she donates a portion of her sales to causes close to her heart. She was proving to the world and to herself that she was a woman who embodied not just outer beauty but also inner beauty…
First Lesbian Playboy Playmate
In 2003, Stephanie came out as Playboy magazine’s first lesbian centerfold. Then, in their 2004 “Best of” feature, The Village Voice declared her the “Best lesbian sex symbol,” saying it was “hard to turn a page in a queer rag without seeing the willowy model peeking out in a bikini or nothing at all.”
Writer And Publishing Company
Then in 2003, Stephanie Adams added writer to her resume. After her aunt passed away from breast cancer, she dedicated even more of her time to writing. She published her first book in 2007 and started her own publishing company. That same year, she published a book dedicated to her deceased aunt titled “He Only Takes The Best,” followed by another book written in honor of her other aunt titled “Guardian.” But her happy-go-lucky image changed in 2006…
The 2006 Incident
During a dispute about where to drop her off, a New York City taxi driver called the police on Stephanie Adams. He falsely reported that she was armed and threatened to shoot him, in addition to saying she flashed him vampire teeth. Adams alleged that once police arrived, they threw her to the ground, causing injuries to her neck and back. She subsequently sued the New York City Police Department and was awarded $1.2 million by the jury, although the judge later reduced it to $373,000.
From Gay To Straight
Apparently, the incident affected her more than she may have even realized at the time. Adams joked with her lawyer that she started out the lawsuit as gay and by the end, she was straight and married. During the course of the lawsuit, Adams met and married chiropractor, Charles Nicolia, who is said to have helped her with the back problems she suffered from the ordeal. The couple met on match.com and announced in an interview, “We felt like we were soul mates right from the beginning.”
Expecting A Baby
One year later, in 2010, Adams became pregnant with her first child and it was one of the happiest times in the young couples’ life. Nicolia helped his wife with her chronic back pain at his treatment center, Wall Street Chiropractic, and stuck by her side throughout the pregnancy when she was on bed rest.
One may think this couple would be together forever, but that’s far from what happened. Five years later, Adams filed for divorce and the secrets of what really happened throughout their relationship were exposed. It turns out, they reportedly had at least 10 domestic incident reports filed with police…
Relationship Takes A Turn For The Worst
Most were for fights between the two of them but others involved Adams and another woman. Adams even had Nicolai arrested after claiming that he gave her food she was allergic to. After a bitter divorce battle, the couple was awarded joint-custody of their Vincent, but even that was too much for them to handle.
Visitation Rights For Vincent
Their relationship became so toxic that Adams would meet Nicolai at the first precinct in Tribeca, New York, just to hand over Vincent for visitation. As their co-parenting relationship grew weaker, it seems that Adams’ life was on a downward spiral…
She sought to get away from New York and the drama of her messy divorce by taking a trip to Spain. She wanted to take Vincent with her but was declined the opportunity by a judge. At this point, many who knew Adams became concerned for her mental state as she just wanted to get away from all the drama.
New York City’s Gotham Hotel
A distraught Adams opted for a hotel stay at New York City’s swanky Gotham Hotel instead. For rooms costing around $900 per night, she spared no expense for the luxuries that she desired. Adams and her 7-year-old son checked into the hotel around 6 p.m. on Thursday night and were staying in a 25th-floor penthouse suite.
But early Friday morning, a hotel guest reported a loud noise on the second floor. Investigators were called to the scene where they discovered Adams and Vincent’s deceased bodies laying on the ground. The former Playboy Playmate reported jumped with her son to their deaths from the Midtown hotel. Both of them died immediately upon impact from multiple blunt impact injuries.
An autopsy report ruled that Adams’ death was a suicide and the cause of Vincent’s death was a homicide. But, what could prompted a woman who seemed to have it all to killing her son and then taking her own life? Was the bitter divorce too much to handle or was it something else?
No Suicide Note
Adams didn’t leave a suicide note and she didn’t warn any friends or family members about what she was going to do. But Nicolai’s reaction to the death of Adams and his son was heartbreaking. According to Nicolai’s lawyer, he is in a “total state of shock,” after the tragedy.
“He’s numb, as one would expect.” Vincent was the center of Nicolai’s life and many described him as an amazing and caring father to his son. “I can remember him talking about when his son first started to read…He was a very excited father, very proud…I do know that he was very distraught and very saddened by the breakup of his marriage,” a close friend of Nicolai’s said. After the horrific suicide and homicide, a friend of Adams shared what she knew about why Adams wished to go to Spain…
Life After Nicolai
Adams had a boyfriend who had homes in Spain and London. “All I want to do is take my son and get away from this nightmare for a few days,” Adams told the New York Post after one of her court hearings. It apparently devastated her that she and Nicolai had to do custody exchanges at the police precinct to ensure no violence took place.
Close Relationship With Her Son
Friends that knew Adams spoke out saying they were “stunned” by the incident as Vincent was “her whole life.” One person said she loved her son so much that she homeschooled him to spend more time with him. “She was so close to that child, she wouldn’t even let the child go to school.” The whole situation is pretty sad.
