Reid Gray and his wife Quinn were, for all intents and purposes, the quintessential millionaire couple. She was a beautiful, younger woman, he was a wealthy, lonely man who worked a bit too hard for his own good.
Despite their differences though, the two of them managed to build a small but happy family and even had two beautiful children together. Then, in 2009, the most unusual thing happened…
It was a Sunday night, the day before Labor day 2009 and millionaire Reid Gray was working late. When he finally arrived home, he found that other than his children, no one seemed to be home. It seemed unusual that his wife would just leave two kids by themselves, so he decided to try her cell phone: he got no reply.
After looking around for a little bit, he found a note in Quinn’s handwriting. The message upon it indicated very matter-of-factly that she had been kidnapped. He couldn’t believe it, but she’d obviously been forced to write the note. He was just thankful they hadn’t taken the kids too. As soon as making sure they were ok, the phone rang…
Over the next several days, Reid received a number of phone calls from his wife. Quinn said that the kidnappers were holding her hostage unless he paid them $50,000. According to her, the men who had taken her were fellows Reid had owed money to, loan sharks. This of course greatly confused him, as he made a million dollars a year and had never been involved with any loan sharks in his life.
During the course of all his many conversations with Quinn, none of which could be tracked, Reid was told that they were getting annoyed at his reticence to pay. Instead, the kidnappers began communicating with Quinn’s mother. Soon, they began to send instructions on where to drop the money…
What followed was a “scavenger hunt” of sorts. In order to get the money to the drop off point, Quinn had left a bunch of notes in her handwriting and given them to the kidnappers, who left them around for Reid to find. Before he could drop off the money Quinn reappeared.
It was a miracle, after being gone for only several days, Quinn Gray reappeared. She told her husband that she had just been dropped off in a van and as soon as they had their tearful reunion, called the police. The story of her kidnapping was quite an amazing tale…
The details were kind of sketchy to begin with, but even more unnerving to police and indeed, her husband, was how much her personality had changed. She was hostile towards the officers and especially towards her husband, whom she believed had refused to pay on purpose and wanted her dead.
The Grays went home feeling remarkably less relieved than they had been upon her return. The next day, she returned to the station to answer more questions. Her story of three men being involved in her initial note was replaced by one, single fellow named Jasmin. According to her, Jasmin had tied her up, put tape on her mouth and taken her to a location she couldn’t recall…
She had marks on her arms and legs where he had apparently cut her. She remembered Jasmin going out to the grocery store, and what he got there for her. It was enough for the police to look into surveillance footage of nearby stores. In no time at all, they’d found the man who had kidnapped her, they’d found Jasmin.
25-year-old Jasmin Osmanovic was found after police pulled his car over. He was arrested and charged with kidnapping for ransom. When they took him to the station to question him, however, the Jacksonville mechanic informed the police that he was in possession of a tape that they just had to hear…
Apparently Jasmin and Quinn had met prior to her kidnapping at a gas station and found themselves very attracted to one another. They began an affair which went on for several months. Osmanovic revealed a plan steeped in deceit, lust, and infidelity. Police weren’t able to corroborate this statement at the time, but that didn’t matter, the tape he had said it all.
Truth Comes Out
The truth had been staring them in the face the whole time. Quinn’s handwritten notes, her anger at her husband’s refusal to pay, her strange, conflicting accounts of the whole ordeal. Now it all made complete sense. Quinn Gray hadn’t been kidnapped at all, she had tried to extort her husband…
Though most people didn’t know it, Reid and Quinn had been having marriage problems for a while. Both of them had been unfaithful and the idea of divorce had been bandied about for some time. He told as much to police when she first vanished, simply because he worried that perhaps one of her dalliances had been responsible.
Quinn had hoped that her wealthy husband would pony up the $50,000 so she and her lover could use it to have some fun. Luckily for him, Jasmin Osmanovic was no fool. He had made the tape in order to ensure that she didn’t try to pin the blame all on him. His “captive” Quinn had spent most of her time in a hotel, waiting for payment…
Did it Herself
Quinn was alone in the hotel for days with nothing to do and as if that weren’t bad enough, her husband didn’t seem to want to pay the ransom. She knew that she might have to give up the scam and come home and so she made the marks on her body herself. That way, when she did miraculously reappear, she’d have a good story to tell.
Stand by Her
Both Jasmin Osmanovic and Quinn Gray were promptly arrested for extortion. In the beginning, Reid actually stood by his wife. Despite all that had happened between them, he truly believed that she had been kidnapped and that it was that scoundrel Osmanovic who was extorting him. That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to find out the truth though…
Proof in Lies
Reid Gray arranged for his unfaithful wife to take a lie detector test. Obviously his faith in his wife had its limits. He would have been a fool not to doubt her at least a little bit. Unsurprisingly, she failed the lie detector test, which prompted him to finally listen to Jasmin’s tape at long last.
Once he heard her confession over the tape, Reid backed off. He was no longer going to stand by the woman who had not only broken his trust and her fidelity, but had placed their children in the middle of a cruel joke. When all was said and done, Jasmin pled guilty to extortion and eventually so did Quinn. They both received several years of probation. But her story was far from over…
Divorce at Last
In April of 2010 Reid Gray finally had enough and did the thing he should have done years before: he divorced Quinn and filed for primary custody of their two children. He also added the additional proviso that his financial support during her legal issues be considered during the divorce. Quinn did not receive custody and her settlement in the divorce was significantly less than she would have received otherwise.
Despite everything that has happened and every scrap of proof pointing to her guilt, she still maintains her innocence. According to her, she was in fact kidnapped and only took her plea for her family’s sake. The craziest part about the whole scheme was that if she had just divorced Reid and not tried some cockamamie flim-flam, she’d have gotten a lot more money and primary custody of her kids.
