There is love and then there is something called obsession. The two cannot be confused and the following story highlights just that.
It depicts how one woman tried to deceive the public and the man of her dreams. She went to great lengths to convince everyone that she was just a princess going to great lengths to rescue her prince. But the evidence told otherwise…
Born in 1949, Joyce McKinney grew up in a small town in Minneapolis, North Carolina. She had a high IQ for most of her life and she was able to enter into an accelerated program in high school. McKinney graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee University, but it was there that she discovered her love for a Mormon.
A Mormon Lifestyle
While living with a Mormon family during college, McKinney decided to convert to the Church of Latter Day Saints. The family had convinced her it would be a good way to live and ensured she would find a decent marriage with a Mormon man. But, McKinney, who was extremely obsessed with beauty pageants couldn’t put marriage as a priority until she achieved her goal…
Miss Wyoming World
McKinney achieved her goal when she became Miss Wyoming World in 1974 and competed in the Miss USA Pageant. Since she didn’t win the pageant, she moved to Utah to go to graduate school and it was there that she met the man of her dreams.
Breaking A Mormon Rule
Kirk Anderson was tall, shy, and only 19-years-old at the time, making him much younger than McKinney. But, according to McKinney, their first meeting was something out of a movie, with the couple racing their corvettes. Joyce felt like it was love at first sight and by their third date, they were naming their children. Kirk and McKinney lost their virginities to each other, which was against the Mormon religion to do before marriage. Kirk became overcome with guilt…
Kirk Was Sent Away On A Mission
After breaking the pre-marital sex rule, Kirk’s mom was not very fond of McKinney, so he went for advice to his bishop who arranged for him to go on a mission. McKinney was not happy about this and she turned her back on Mormonism since she couldn’t risk losing the man of her dreams.
No One Was Telling McKinney Where Kirk Was
The Church moved Kirk to California and then to Oregon and McKinney followed him to both places. Finally, Kirk was sent overseas to England, although McKinney’s obsession with him was not letting up. The Church refused to tell her where Kirk was, so she took it upon herself to find out…
The only way to truly know where Kirk was, was to hire a private detective. However, McKinney couldn’t afford one, so she started working as a “glamour model,” posing for bondage photos and also working as a call girl performing oral sex. If a client wanted intercourse, she would pass the man over to her associate.
Hiring A Private Detective
For two years, McKinney worked to pay for a private detective and once she could afford one, she set off to England. She was joined by her accomplice, a guy named Keith May who was just as obsessed with Joyce as she was with Kirk. McKinney and Keith flew to England using fake passports, armed with fake pistols, chloroform, cinnamon flavored rubbing oil and fur-lined handcuffs. Clearly, they were preparing for something bigger than McKinney initially planned…
Preparing To Kidnap
The pair rented a cottage in Okehampton and drove to the town of Ewell, where they learned Kirk had been working at a church. On September 14, 1977, Keith engaged Kirk in conversation by pretending to be a potential convert. He then invited Kirk to join him in his car to point out the way to the local Mormon headquarters.
By then, Keith pulled out the fake gun and forced Kirk into the back seat where he chloroformed him. Back at the cottage, McKinney had cooked Kirk all his favorite foods, including fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and chocolate cake. The bed was even made up with blue silk sheets to match his eyes and his initials. One Kirk arrived, he was in for the shock of his life…
Once Kirk arrived, he was under McKinney’s orders. After dinner, Keith chained Kirk to the bed with a 10-foot chain and McKinney got to have her way with him. She reportedly gave him an expensive ring and offered to give him a back rub with the cinnamon oil to relax him. McKinney claims that Kirk consented to this, but he told another story.
Mission: Get Kirk Out Of Mormonism
McKinney reportedly ripped off Kirk’s sacred Mormon underwear and burned it. “There was only one way to make Kirk get out of Mormonism, and that was to make love to him…Because for a Mormon missionary to have a love affair is totally taboo,” she said. So basically, she planned to eff the Mormon out of him…
McKinney claims she never raped Kirk, believing that it is impossible for a woman to rape a man, but she did say that typing him up was to help him overcome his sexual inhibitions. They reportedly had sex for the three days that Kirk was kidnapped and by September 17, 1977, he was able to escape.
Kirk went to the police to tell them what happened and three days later, McKinney and Keith were arrested in a sting operation. Kirk had arranged to meet McKinney and that’s when the police arrested her. Since Kirk refused to speak about what happened after McKinney was arrested, the public only had her side of the story. While she was in Holloway prison for three months to await trial, she gave an hour-long statement in court and it was mind blowing…
Released On Bail
McKinney claimed that the Mormons bribed the cops to arrest her and said that she lived in fear of the Mormon Church. She also told the court that Kirk strung her along with promises of a ring and marriage. Even though McKinney was being charged with forcible abduction, false imprisonment, assault and possession of imitation firearms with criminal intent, she was released on bail for fear of her mental health.
Soon, she became the darling of tabloid press. Journalists were falling over themselves to write stories about her and she even asked the court to lift the restrictions on what they could print. McKinney was basking in the glory of fame and to some, she embodied the wronged woman, but to others, she was a manipulative drama queen. McKinney knew how to play a crowd and in the van on the way to court, she pressed an open bible in the window with a message…
Playing The Victim
“HE HAD SEX WITH ME FOR FOUR DAYS. PLEASE GET THE TRUTH TO THE PUBLIC. HE MADE IT LOOK LIKE A KIDNAPPING.” The tabloids ate this up and McKinney even took out ads in Daily Variety announcing that she was writing a book and a screenplay based on her case.
Living The Life
She was at a new party every night of the week where she met members of the Rolling Stones and even went to premiers of Saturday Night Fever. It somehow never occurred to McKinney that her partying with stars may hurt her case and that fleeing to the U.S. via Canada on false passports was a good idea. When McKinney left, she pretended to be a deaf-mute…
Still Obsessed With Kirk Anderson
Once Joyce left England, they made no effort to extradite her back and the aborted trial wound up costing the UK a lot of money. Fast forward to 1984 and McKinney was arrested for stalking Kirk again. Police found chains and handcuffs in the trunk of her car, suggesting she was going to make another attempt at kidnapping.
Living A Bizarre Life
Things got even weirder when in 2007, it was revealed that McKinney had gone to South Korea and spent $25,000 to clone her dog Booger. Over the years, she’s never held a job, but it’s believed that she lives off her late father. As far as Kirk Anderson, he reportedly works as either a real estate or travel agent. He prefers to forget that those three days ever happened and his story has become one of a cautionary tale for what could happen to Mormon men if they get caught up with a predatory female.
