When most people think of the meaning in unconditional love, they usually refer to a parent’s love of their child. The bond shared between a parent and child can light up the sky. But, what happens when a parent’s love becomes distorted into a predatory one?
When Katie was desperately searching for her biological parents, she hoped to reunite and become a part of their lives. Katie didn’t realize that the people who were supposed to protect her from the dangers of the world, can at times, be the real predators that prey even on their own children.
In 1998, Katie was born to her mother and father, Steven and Alyssa, but, sadly, she was given up for adoption soon after birth. Overwhelmed by the pressure of being a 17-year-old mom, Alyssa and Steven, then 22, decided adoption would give their baby daughter a better chance in life. A couple from New York adopted Katie and raised her as their own.
Katie was forever grateful to her adoptive parents, but deep down inside, she knew that her biological parents were somewhere out there, and that one day, she would have them back in her life. After years of feeling lost and the empty void of not knowing who her real parents were, she decided to search for them….
Katie waited until her 18th birthday, to begin the search for her biological parents. She used the endless information available on the internet to begin a preliminary search. But, it was her social media account that narrowed it down to her real parents….
Via social media, Katie first made contact in 2015, but her mother had never heard her adopted name before and was unaware of who she was. Alyssa thought it was some sort of spam email, and brushed it off accordingly. But when Katie sent a follow up message to her father, Steven via a genealogy website, the parents realized the sender was their estranged daughter, who had just turned 18.
Alyssa, Katie’s biological mother, always thought about the adorable brown-eyed baby girl she reluctantly gave up for adoption after becoming pregnant in her teens. So, when Katie tracked her down, Alyssa wept for joy at the possibility of getting to know the child she feared she would never meet.
In 2016, Katie took a train to Virginia to meet her biological parents and two little sisters for the first time. It was what they all imagined, but more. The meeting was filled with love, joy, and lots of tears. So, it wasn’t surprising that a few weeks later, Alyssa and Steven Pladi drove to Wingdale, New York to watch Katie walk the stage to attain her diploma at her high school graduation.
Determined on establishing a life long relationship with Katie, Alyssa asked her to consider moving in with them. Without hesitation, in 2016, Katie moved to Virginia with her parents and two siblings. However, this would not be the fairytale ending she had been wishing for, but a nightmare, to say the least….
Within the next few months, Alyssa was noticing that her husband of almost two decades, Steve, was behaving somewhat odd and being distant with her. Alyssa was perplexed at his erratic behavior, after all, they just reunited with their long lost daughter after 18 years. Alyssa was unsuspecting of the ultimate betrayal…
There was only one person Steven seemed to be happier around. Steven, who worked from home testing products for Amazon, began to spend more time alone with Katie, spending nights sleeping on her bedroom floor. When Alyssa expressed to Steven that his sleeping situation in Katie’s room was inappropriate and must end; he would become furious, often throwing stuff and yelling at her for suggesting that there was something going on. Katie also insisted that she only let her father sleep in the room to try to help salvage their relationship by talking to him.
At this point, Alyssa and Steve’s relationship became irreparable, which led to Alyssa filing for divorce, and moving out of their house with their two young daughters. Alyssa insisted that Katie come with her, but she wanted to stay with her father. Alyssa suspected her ex-husband was slowly brainwashing Katie to hate her mother, but never expected the nauseating revelation she would soon discover…
Leaving Father’s House
After the divorce, Alyssa was aware of the possible effects it would have on their children, but her 11-year-old daughter seemed to take it the hardest. Every time Alyssa’s youngest daughter would leave her father’s house after a visit, she would become noticeably agitated, withdrawn, and angry.
Alyssa figured she should try reading her daughter’s journal to gain insight into what was causing the sudden change in behavior. Alyssa’s discovery in her daughter’s journal pages caused her body to shake from head to toe, her head started to spin, and she had to hold onto something to keep her from falling…
Alyssa’s daughter had made made terrifying drawings of her father and sister with devil horns and tails, writing that Katie is pregnant, and calling her dad a slut and satan. She wrote that their baby would be half demon and half human. In another harrowing entry, she wrote: “My dad calls her baby also his baby. Did he make her pregnant? My dad even says she’s my stepmom wtf. He doesn’t even want me to say or call her sister anymore. ‘Katie is my sister, she’s probably his wife now, but in nature she’s only my sister. Does she see me as a daughter or sister?”
When Alyssa finished reading her entries, she completely lost it, and confronted Steven about the sickening discovery she had just made. Steven confessed to impregnating his daughter and proclaimed his love to her. He also told Alyssa that the underlying reason he rushed to divorce her was so that he could marry Katie…
Would Not Stand In His Way
Steven told Alyssa she would not stand in his way. He revealed to her that he had already confided in his mother and that Katie’s adoptive parents were also told, and that they weren’t happy with the relationship at first, but, they eventually accepted it. Steven emphasized that he and Katie were not going to change for anyone and that if anyone finds out, they would simply leave town and leave everything else behind.
Alyssa immediately alerted police to the discoveries she made in her daughter’s journal and also, sought a protective order for her younger daughters from their father. The order was granted but also meant that Alyssa was barred from contacting either Steven or Katie and hasn’t spoken to them since.
Based on Katie’s social media account, the father and daughter had a small wedding ceremony with his mother and a few additional guests. In the pictures posted, Katie is shown clearly pregnant and embracing her dad. Police used the pictures posted on her as social media account as evidence of their illegal relationship.
It wasn’t until January 27 of this year, however, that the pair were arrested at their new home in Knightdale, North Carolina, that they shared with Steven’s mother. Authorities said when they were arrested a baby boy was with them. Warrants revealed the baby was born in September 2017.
The father and daughter duo are being held in the Wake County Detention Center, pending extradition to Virginia. They have been charged with incest, adultery, and contributing to delinquency. If found guilty, they could face up to ten years behind bars.
Unsurprisingly, Steven has since been released on a $1 million bond, however Katie remains behind bars at Wake County Detention Center pending her extradition hearing on February 28. According to Alyssa, Katie is a breastfeeding mother that should be with her baby, but instead, she is struggling emotionally and physically in jail. In complete outrage, Alyssa finds it pathetic and selfish of Steven for applying all his financial resources to be released from jail, but would not use it on Katie instead, to be closer to her newborn baby.
Editor’s update December 12, 2018: It was later reported that Katie Pladl was released in early February prior to her hearing on February 28. On February 12, Knightdale, North Carolina police conducted a wellness check at Steven Pladl’s home at Steven’s mother’s request. During that wellness check, the police found Steven and Katie’s baby boy dead, though Steven was gone. On that same day, Steven drove to Katie’s adoptive parents’ home in Connecticut where Steven then shot her, her adoptive father, 56-year-old Anthony Fusco, then himself. All three died of their injuries.
