Most couples like to believe they were brought together by fate or destiny, but the truth is often less magical. In reality, most couples’ paths cross strictly by chance.
However, after graduating and moving to London together, one couple discovered they really were destined to be together after a funny story revealed a part of their past that they had no memory of…
In 2011, Heidi Parker and Ed Savitt were both attending Newcastle University in Tyne, England for their first year of college. At the time, the 2 young students were complete strangers studying drastically different subjects offered at the university.
Since Heidi was studying Economics and Management and Ed was pursuing a major in Psychology and Business, there was no chance they would have any classes together and no reason their paths should have crossed. Fate, however, had other plans…
A New Home
During their first year at Newcastle University, Ed moved into a house that Heidi had previously lived in. Once he finished moving himself in and settling into his new home for the next semester, he attempted to do some simple chores.
All Ed wanted to do was clean some dirty clothes, but he couldn’t figure out how to work the dryer. After a few days passed by without any luck getting the dryer to work, Ed decided he was going to need some help if he ever wanted to have dry clothes again…
A Chance Meeting
Ed looked at the student house’s community board and sent a message to a girl named Heidi, whose name and contact details were still posted to the board. A little while later, Heidi showed up at the house to show the new tenant the trick to using the machine.
When Heidi showed up at Ed’s door, however, he was instantly attracted to her and asked her on a date that very afternoon. Luckily, the attraction was mutual and Heidi and Ed planned their very first date together after their chance encounter…
The First Date
The couple’s first date went perfectly, and at the end of the night, they even planned a second date. According to Ed and Heidi, there was an instant connection and they felt like they had known each other forever even though they had only just met.
Things Get Serious
After the first few dates, Heidi and Ed spent every second with each other. Within a matter of weeks, they went from perfect strangers to being in a committed relationship. “We knew we were going to be together forever,” Heidi said about their relationship…
4 Years Later
While some relationships start out strong and fizzle with time, Ed and Heidi’s relationship only got stronger as time went by. So when the couple graduated from Newcastle University, they had no trouble transitioning from college life to adult life, which can be a challenge for most college couples.
Introducing The Families
After graduation, Ed and Heidi moved in with each other. It was clear to the pair that the relationship was going to last so they thought it was about time their families finally met each other. After settling into their new apartment, they planned a dinner with their mothers…
Heidi and Ed planned a dinner out in Wandsworth, South London, and invited Heidi’s mother, Kay Parker, and Ed’s mom, Fiona Savitt. On the night of the dinner, both Kay and Fiona seemed to be getting along great, which was a big relief for the couple.
The Final Test
Both Ed and Heidi were incredibly close with their families, so it was important that the families also got along with each other if they were going to have a real future together. Once they saw how well their mothers got along, they finally were able to relax…
Not only did Fiona and Kay get along, but they found out they had a lot in common. They both loved taking family sailing trips during the winters. At one point in the night, Kay started telling a story about a trip the family took when Heidi was just a little girl.
Heidi’s Vacation ‘Boyfriend’
According to Kay, they went on a vacation to Gumbet, Turkey, when Heidi was just 6-years-old. During the trip, Heidi met another little boy who was on vacation with his family. For the entire 2 weeks, the kids were inseparable and the family had always joked that he was Heidi’s vacation ‘boyfriend’…
Kay explained that the little boy’s name was also Ed, just like Heidi’s current boyfriend. When Fiona heard the funny coincidence, she accidentally smashed her wine glass in surprise. However, the conversation moved on to other topics, and the group forgot about the cute story.
Cleaning Out The Attic
While everyone else forgot about the story, Kay couldn’t shake the feeling that the story was more than a coincidence. A few weeks later, Kay was cleaning out her attic when she came across a box marked ‘Gumbet, July 1997’…
Blast From The Past
Inside, were dozens of photos from the trip, and a few featured the little boy who held Heidi’s hand for almost the entire 2-week holiday. Kay decided to give Fiona a call and discovered they had been in Gumbet at the same time. When Kay sent over some photos from their trip, however, Fiona started to freak out.
The Truth Comes Out
“When Kay sent me the photo of the little boy I shrieked, ‘Oh my goodness, that’s Ed!’,” Fiona said. “I was screaming, it was just unreal. I sent it to Fiona, then loads more photographs came out,” Kay added. “None of us had any idea Heidi and Ed had met before university…”
Destined To Be Together
“I didn’t believe in fate before finding that out but there’s no arguing with it,” said Heidi. “We’re clearly destined to be together!” The couple later got married at Haddon Hall, a manor house in Derbyshire, surrounded by all their friends and families.
Bonded For Life
“It’s crazy to think we could have got married, shared our lives together, but then never found out about this,” Heidi added. Today, the couple lives in London where Ed owns a coffee shop and Heidi works as a communications officer. Their entire families have become extremely close and regularly go on vacations together. “It was not just Heidi and Ed who met on that holiday but all of us. It is such a lovely story,” Kay explained.
