You never know just what you’re going to come across on a country road in Arkansas….
However, nothing could’ve prepared father and son duo Bret and Zach Winingar, had no idea what it was they were going to encounter, on a remote country roar in Little Rock, Arkansas. The duo were on their motorbikes, but they just had to stop when they spotted this…
It was a cold Sunday afternoon as this local father was making his way down a back country road. He saw a covered crate in a remote field, just off of the side of the road. Something didn’t seem right…
Just before he went further. The dad took a picture of his son, showing the location on the remote country road. He later shared the location with authorities
The guys just thought it was some old abandoned crate, but Zach and Brett felt they had to take a closer look. They weren’t ready for the emotional rollercoaster they were about to get on…
On closer inspection it became clear that the abandoned crate was in fact a pet carrier. One in not such good repair, and seemingly deserted for a while.
When the bikers took an even closer look, they couldn’t work out what the curious hole in the top was. Whether it was caused by impact or by something else.
Neither father nor son could swear by it, but they thought they heard a strange sound coming from the object. It was time to find out what was inside…
A half-dead, totally emaciated dog, had been left by someone inside this crate in what Bret could only describe as “beyond horrible.” Bret told reporters that the animal was “reduced to a ragged, scabby skeleton, smelling so strongly of death that we couldn’t stand to be downwind.”
The poor pooch was in such a bad way, no one could work out if it had been beaten or even hit by a car. However, they soon realised that the abrasions were as a result of the dog’s confinement.
It wasn’t clear how long the dog had been locked inside for, but it seemed like it could have been months. Bret could only describe what he saw as a “sickeningly long ordeal” for the starving animal.
Bret and Zach stopped and thought about the situation, not wanting to get overly emotional. They decided to be practical and pragmatic and realized their motorbikes were no means of transport for the rescued pooch.
There was no way these guys were going to leave the poor dog there on her own again. They moved on to plan B and decided to send one of them back to get help.
Zach headed home on his bike to pick up his truck, although he ran out of gas on the way home. This delayed things for them, and they had no idea whether the dog would remain near the crate or run off and possibly die.
This poor dog was too tired and sick to go anywhere, and when the guys returned with the truck were, “surprised to find her huddled against the very thing that had recently been her former prison.”
Signs Of Life
The dog rescuers thought they might be too late, as the pooch laid there lifeless and barely breathing. But then, a small whimper. As Bret said, “I thought, if you’ve got enough strength to growl, you’ve got enough strength to live.”
As is so often the case, the love that Bret and Zach showed the unnamed dog was reciprocated immediately. They gave her some food, and she offered kisses in return.
The biker duo took the dog home, gave here some more food and plenty of water, and a nice bath. But they soon realized that this pooch was going to need some more serious, professional help…
After her bath, they took the dog to a vet to address her injuries and general state of health. The vet revealed that the dog was in fact a pup and was only about 8 months old!
After her awful ordeal, the dog, who the guys named Charlie Bravo, adopted her as their own, and she instantly became part of the family.
Bret already has a number of dogs and wasn’t planning on taking on another one. However, his connection with CB was so strong due to the way he found her, that he decided she was a keeper.
No, not in a bad way, quite the opposite! CB has a massive fan base, has her own Facebook page and a blog. She was lucky to receive donations from dog lovers to help pay for her medical bills and is a story of hope in the face of extreme adversity.
