Chicago Politician Who Criticized Squirrels Is Hospitalized By Squirrel ‘Attack’

Albert Einstein once said “coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous,” and boy, does God have a good sense of humor!

Take, for example, an oddity that happened in Chicago last October. Politician Alderman Howard Brookins Jr. of Chicago’s 21st Ward launched a public tirade against squirrels in his community. His charges against them were that they were costing the city $300,000 in fees to repair garbage bins that squirrels had gnawed through, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

The Times went on to reveal that Chicago has about 1.4 million black and blue trash bins in circulation and when squirrels chew their way through the plastic, it’s up to the city to replace them. While the price of replacement might be high, the city couldn’t envision a foreseeable solution to Brookins grievances, which he publicly aired at a budget hearing. Brookins’ colleagues giggled, but ultimately nobody took the complaints seriously.

“Well, the squirrels — uh — may I get back to you on that, alderman? We’d be happy to … talk about strategies to assist residents with wildlife. [But] I’m not sure at this time what CACC might be able to do with aggressive squirrels. But let us look into it,” said Susan Russell, executive director of the City’s Commission on Animal Care and Control.

A dejected Brookins put the issue to rest just long enough to fall prey to an aggressive squirrel attack. According to the Star Tribune, Brookins was riding his bike on November 14 when a squirrel hurled itself into his path.

The beast cut Brookins’ ride short when it wrapped its body around the spokes of his front wheel and sent the elected official flying. He flipped over the handlebars, fractured his skull, and landed in the hospital. The accident also broke his nose and knocked out a handful of teeth, the Star Tribune reported. He was in the hospital until Thursday, November 17.

But now Brookins has referred to the squirrel as a radicalized assailant. “I can think of no other reason for this squirrel’s actions than that it was like a suicide bomber, getting revenge,” he told the Tribune.

Some outlets, like the Chicago Sun Times simply referred to the incident as a “freak accident,” too frightened to call radical squirrel terrorism by its name.
