After Sara struggled to conceive, she underwent infertility treatment at the Reproductive Medicine Institute in Evanston, and while she became pregnant, she delivered stillborn twins and suffered a miscarriage. Sara’s mother, Kristine Casey, had gone through her own pregnancies without difficulty, and at that crucial time, she was the hope the family needed.

After discussing the risks and health concerns with their doctor, the family chose to go ahead with the pregnancy and after countless medical examinations, doctors concluded Casey may suffer from fatigue, the main symptom caused by age if she went ahead with the pregnancy.

Sara recalled: “My mother leaned far back in her chair and began to laugh. ‘Tired!’ she said. ‘I was tired when I had no help and two children under five to run after every day. I’m retired now – I don’t have to do anything. If fatigue is the big factor, I think I can handle it.’”

Sara told the Chicago Tribune that she and her mother had hands as baby Finnean was delivered via cesarean section. “When the baby let out a cry, I lost it,” she said. “It’s such a miracle.” Kristine then became the oldest woman ever to give birth in Chicago.

“Connell’s memoir recounts the heartbreak of losing pregnancies; the process of opening herself to the idea of her mother carrying her child; and the profound bond that blossomed between mother and daughter as a result.”

“Inspiring and ultimately triumphant, Bringing in Finn is a tale of despair, hope, and redemption—and the discovery that with unconditional love there are no limits to what can be achieved,” according to the book’s description.
